Copenhagen was announced as the host city for GHGT-19 on 29 October 2026, during the closing session of GHGT-18 in Perth, Australia.
Since its first edition in 1992, GHGT has grown into the world’s leading international conference on carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS). Held every two years, it brings together researchers, industry representatives and policymakers to exchange knowledge on CCUS research, technology and deployment. This year’s conference in Perth attracted more than 1,100 participants from 41 countries.
The announcement comes at a pivotal time for CCUS in Denmark. Backed by substantial public investment in research, innovation and deployment, major carbon capture projects are progressing, while Greensand recently became the EU’s first commercial-scale offshore CO₂ storage facility.
“We are very much looking forward to bringing the CCUS world to Copenhagen in 2028. Denmark is a valued member of IEAGHG. More importantly, Denmark is the fastest moving country on CCUS in the EU. It has policy, great research and development, and best of all it has developed commercial-scale projects which are world-leading,” says Tim Dixon of IEAGHG.
For INNO-CCUS, hosting the conference is also an opportunity to address the challenges that remain in bringing CCUS technologies to scale.
“Bringing GHGT to Copenhagen is a clear recognition of the progress we’re seeing in Denmark’s CCUS sector. But major challenges remain: How do we scale up the technologies and make the economics work? Addressing these challenges requires international collaboration, and bringing researchers and industry representatives from around the world together in Denmark is a valuable opportunity,” says Karina M. Søgaard, Partnership Director at INNO-CCUS.
GHGT is organised by the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D Programme (IEAGHG), an international research collaboration focused on CCUS. INNO-CCUS represents Denmark in IEAGHG and will co-host GHGT-19 in Copenhagen. As Denmark’s national CCUS research and innovation partnership, INNO-CCUS brings together universities, research institutions and industry to advance technologies across the CCUS value chain.
Further details about GHGT-19 in Copenhagen in 2028 will be announced in due course.
