A biogas facility with carbon capture is scheduled to begin operation in the Midtthy Energy Zone in 2027. Based on geological and geophysical data, the area is also considered a suitable location for constructing Denmark’s first major CO2 mineralisation facility. LOCASH will investigate this potential and provide a comprehensive technological and societal foundation for a future mineralisation facility, demonstrating the potential of nature-inspired CO2 mineralisation technology.
LOCASH will conduct test drilling up to 300 m to evaluate the geological potential for CO2 mineralisation by analysing drill cores and performing pumping tests. The project will also prepare for a future CO2 mineralisation facility through public surveys, stakeholder engagement, targeted communication with the public and authorities, local business development, and technological modelling and planning. LOCASH focuses on developing decentralised CO2 storage for locally captured CO2, eliminating the need for CO2 liquefaction and transport while reducing associated costs and energy consumption.
LOCASH will help prepare the implementation of CO2 mineralisation in Denmark by providing geological, technological and societal knowledge to support future deployment. Project outputs will include reports and scientific publications for the public, local and national authorities, including the Danish Energy Agency, and stakeholders across the Danish CCUS value chain. Through communication and public engagement, the project will increase awareness and understanding of CO2 mineralisation. Together, these activities will help lay the groundwork for integrating small-to-medium-sized CO2 capture with local CO2 removal in Denmark.
