Unfreezing Climate Action: Scaling Enhanced Rock Weathering on Danish Croplands Using Greenlandic Rock Flour

Objective

This project will demonstrate the potential of Greenlandic rock flour to deliver permanent carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at scale on Danish croplands through Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW). It aims to establish the first Danish reference values for CDR through ERW and to develop and validate an adapted Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) protocol to support integration into carbon markets and policy frameworks. The project also assesses the attitudes of farmers, stakeholders and the public towards ERW to support its wider adoption.

Approach

Over three years, pilot trials will generate data to establish reference values for CDR and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions, develop robust MRV schemes, and improve ERW models for Danish sandy soils. The pilots will represent the first full-scale field deployment of ERW in Denmark. Alongside the technical work, the project will engage stakeholders to improve societal readiness and support wider implementation.

Impact

The project will provide the evidence base needed to assess the potential of Enhanced Rock Weathering (ERW) in Denmark and support its future deployment. Expected outcomes include peer-reviewed publications establishing the first Danish reference values for Greenlandic rock flour-based ERW, a validated Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) protocol, and new knowledge on public acceptance.
