CAP-FLEX

CO2 Capture in Cement Industry with Flexible Energy Sources

Objective

The CAP-FLEX project addresses the challenge of decarbonising cement production, which accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions, by advancing a novel, retrofittable technology for generating a concentrated CO2 stream from limestone calcination. The technology builds on the FUELFLEX® Pyrolyzer platform developed by FLSmidth Cement, integrating electric heating and oxyfuel combustion for high-purity CO2 production. The technology is designed for flexible, cost-effective integration into existing cement plants. Its dual capability of maximising alternative fuel use while enabling high-purity CO2 capture supports the decarbonisation of cement production.

Approach

The project includes industrial data analysis, laboratory-scale validation, advanced process modelling and full-scale demonstration. Risk management, milestone tracking and project governance underpin the execution strategy.

Impact

The project could enable the capture of 60-90% of a cement plant’s CO2 emissions. If deployed across Denmark’s cement sector, this corresponds to up to 2 Mt CO2/year nationally and would support Denmark’s 2030 and 2050 climate targets. In addition to direct emissions reductions, the project aims to deliver broader societal and economic benefits by supporting job creation, public acceptance of carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and Denmark’s position in green technologies.
